Her expertise shines through in courses like Organizational Behavior, Research and Design, Marketing, and Consumer Behavior, all of which are crucial components of the Integrated Project in semester three. With a diverse career spanning over a decade in the Brazilian car industry and the Dutch beer industry, Carmem’s journey is nothing short of inspiring.

A Journey of Learning and Application

Carmem’s professional journey began in the Brazilian car industry, where she worked in market research and product planning for Honda. Seeking to expand her horizons, she pursued a master’s degree in social and behavioral sciences at Tilburg University. During her studies, she undertook a one-year extracurricular placement at Swinkels Family Brewers (Bavaria), where she worked as a Research and Innovation Assistant. This blend of academic and practical experience fueled her passion for applying theory in real-world settings, leading her to BUas.

Passion for Education

Carmem’s love for education is deeply rooted in her desire to make a difference. As an immigrant, she values the opportunity to work within the society she lives in and to support the youth. “Making a difference for even one student makes me happy and satisfied,” she shares. Her dedication to her students is evident in her dynamic teaching style, which includes workshops, lectures, and one-on-one meetings, all designed to energize and engage her students.

Influences and Inspirations

When asked about her biggest influencer, Carmem credits Professor Marcel Zeelenberg from Tilburg University. His guidance on staying true to one’s emotions has left a lasting impact on her. This philosophy is something she strives to impart to her students, encouraging them to remain authentic in their professional and personal lives.

Life Beyond the Classroom

Outside of her academic responsibilities, Carmem enjoys a variety of hobbies. She finds solace in painting bottles, a calming activity that contrasts with her busy professional life. She also enjoys going to the gym, cooking, and spending time by the waterside during the summer. Her love for her cat is well-known among her students, adding a personal touch to her interactions with them.

Advice for Aspiring Professionals

Carmem offers valuable advice to students aspiring to succeed in the hotel and facility industry. She emphasizes the importance of maintaining a neutral perspective when faced with challenges. “If problems occur, don’t take it personally. Often, they are not about you or because of you,” she advises. This mindset helps her navigate the complexities of working with people and focus on what she can control.

Carmem Meira Cunha’s journey from Brazil to Breda is a testament to her resilience, passion, and dedication. Her diverse experiences and commitment to education make her a standout lecturer at BUas.
