Generation Z: Not Fundamentally Different

Generation Z is often portrayed as fundamentally different from older employees—seeking fewer working hours, more flexibility, and having different expectations of work. However, research suggests that these differences are not as significant as they seem. What people value in work appears to be universal: autonomy, flexibility, and a sense of purpose

Breaking Generational Stereotypes

The issue is that organisations are fixated on the overused concept of ‘generations’, which reinforces stereotypes and hinders genuine connection. Instead, they should shift their focus to the evolving career orientations of all employees. Careers are becoming less linear, with a growing trend towards non-traditional paths—such as hybrid work, combination jobs (where permanent employment is mixed with freelance work), and short-term projects or tasks (‘gig economy’). Today’s employees don’t just move upwards in their careers—they move sideways, and sometimes even step into different roles or sectors altogether.

Innovative Career Solutions

Instead of positioning generations against each other, employers and policymakers should enter into dialogue about how they can support all employees in their careers. This may require more agile and self-directed career paths, cross-sectoral collaborations, and perhaps more room for customisation. So let's stop thinking in terms of generations and focus more on how we can talk to each other about innovative solutions that support changing careers in general.
